What is Chiropractic Care?
Chiropractic care is a form of treatment based on the self-healing
capacity of the body and the primary importance of the proper function
and communication of the nervous system in the maintenance of health.
Commonly, patients seek chiropractic care to relieve back or neck pain. While chiropractic has been proven to be an effective treatment for pain, the effects of the chiropractic adjustments stretch far beyond pain relief.
Chiropractic targets the restoration of the inherent ability of the body to heal itself, such as when we cut our fingers or break a bone, without the use of over-the-counter and/or medically prescribed drugs or surgery.
The Nervous System!
The nervous system is the body's master control and is made up of a complex network of cells that use nerve impulses as messages to allow 2-way communication between the brain and the cells of the body.
It is made up of our brain, brainstem, spinal cord, the nerve roots, and nerve cells that supply every muscle, tissue, and organ in the body. There is a nerve root that extends from the spinal cord and exits the spinal column at each level of the spine to supply the messages.
It allows your body to adapt to, and heal from, the various forms of stress (physical, emotional, and chemical) we encounter on a daily basis.
On occasion, the stress is to such an extent that our nervous system is not able to adapt and, in an effort to preserve itself, creates a "short circuit" in the system in the form of a subluxation.
What's a "Subluxation"?
This word is commonly used in the chiropractic to describe a vertebra that has lost its normal positioning in comparison to the vertebrae above and below, resulting in interference to the normal nerve communication.
This interference leads to dysfunction of the tissues that those nerves supply.
A chiropractor's primary goal is to remove the subluxation to restore the nerve system so it can perform optimally.
What is an Adjustment?
An adjustment is a gentle and precise placement of the vertebra or involved joint into its correct position.
This allows the joints to function more optimally and restores proper communication of the nerve system.
The goal is to free up a joint that is not able to move freely by itself due to the adjacent muscle spasms.
There is usually a "popping" sound at the time the adjustment is delivered. This is merely a release of gases that have built up in a joint because it was not moving properly.
Also, adjustments affect the nerve system in a positive manner. Have you ever heard the term, "If you don't use it, you lose it!" This applies to all of the tissues in our bodies, including our nerves! Studies have shown that an adjustment activates the specialized nerve cells surrounding the joint being adjusted and, in a sense, exercises the nerve, making it more able to send nerve impulses through the system.
Simply put, a chiropractic adjustment properly and precisely delivered, is meant to restore optimal communication between the brain and the body.
